VENO TV EDITORIAL NIGERIA @ 66: TIME TO RECREATE OUR IDENTITY

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, this should be more than another season of celebration, speeches and colourful ceremonies. It should be a moment of sober reflection on who we are as a nation, what we represent and the identity we want to build for generations yet unborn.
Every advanced nation has an identity — something distinctive that speaks about its values, discipline, culture, productivity and national aspirations. Nigeria must deliberately recreate an identity built on dignity, responsibility, hard work, security and respect for human life.
One of the greatest responsibilities of government is the protection of lives and property. Government at all levels must therefore become more proactive in tackling insecurity. Nigerians should be able to travel, work, farm, worship and conduct their businesses without living constantly in fear of kidnappers, terrorists, armed robbers and other criminal elements.
There is also an urgent need to address the activities of Agberos and other street groups whose operations have become a menace in many communities and motor parks. No serious society should allow intimidation, extortion, violence and lawlessness to become accepted ways of life. Public spaces must be governed by law, not fear.
But rebuilding Nigeria is not the responsibility of government alone. Citizens must also change their attitudes.
We must recreate a Nigerian identity where honesty is celebrated above fraud, competence above connection, hard work above shortcuts, and service above selfishness. Our young people must be encouraged to believe that success can come through creativity, education, enterprise and legitimate labour.
Poverty is not only about the amount of money in a person's pocket; there can also be a poverty of ideas, vision and mindset. A nation cannot prosper when its people surrender to hopelessness. We must develop the mentality to create, produce, innovate and solve problems rather than waiting endlessly for government.
Nigeria is richly endowed with human and natural resources. What we urgently require is purposeful leadership, responsible citizenship and a renewed national consciousness.
At 66, we must ask ourselves: What does it truly mean to be Nigerian?
Our answer should no longer be defined by corruption, insecurity, disorder or poverty. It should be defined by courage, enterprise, unity, justice, discipline and hope.
Nigeria can rise again, but the recreation of our national identity must begin now.
