United States President Donald Trump has again opened the door to a possible agreement with Iran while delivering a strong warning to Tehran during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump said he believes a deal with Iran could eventually be reached, predicting that an agreement may come after the United States midterm elections in November.
However, the American president combined his diplomatic message with tough rhetoric, warning Iran of devastating consequences if it refuses to pursue peace.
Trump also called on the international community to further isolate Iran economically as tensions surrounding the continuing conflict remain high.
Iran, on its part, has indicated that diplomatic engagement could still be possible under certain conditions, including measures connected with the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials, however, have continued to reject what they describe as intimidation from Washington.
The developments came as world leaders gathered in New York for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the Iran conflict and wider instability in the Middle East featuring prominently in discussions.
Trump maintained that Washington wants an agreement but made clear that the United States is prepared to maintain intense pressure on Tehran if diplomacy fails.
