Nigeria’s Minister of Defence and former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), has called for greater efforts to identify and cut off the support systems that keep terrorism and other forms of insecurity alive.
Speaking in New York, Musa stressed that defeating terrorism requires more than military operations alone, saying security must be seen as the responsibility of everybody.
According to him, the military and other security agencies cannot be everywhere at the same time, making the cooperation of citizens extremely important.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing the principle of “See something, say something.”
Musa said attention must be directed towards finding the “oxygen” of terrorism — including those providing terrorists and bandits with information, funding, food, logistics and other forms of assistance.
He has previously described such support networks as the oxygen that enables terrorists to survive and operate, arguing that cutting them off would greatly weaken criminal groups.
The Defence Minister therefore called for stronger cooperation between citizens, communities and security agencies, maintaining that national security cannot be left to the military alone.
“Security is everybody’s responsibility. The military cannot be everywhere. If you see something, say something.”
