VENO NEWS:K1's Controversial Statement: A Reflection on Trust and Misunderstanding By Kunle Rasheed
Date: 29-01-25

Before now, I had resolved not to dabble into the raging controversy surrounding the statement of 'Ganu' because many would see whatever I write as a support or defense for the renowned Fuji musician, Wasiu Olasunkanmi Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate. It's sad that many forget too easily that as a trained journalist with many years of experience and a social commentator, I possess an unrestricted virtual license, both personal and professional, to air my views in the media spaces, both regular and irregular. This right must not be seen as a support system at all.

Moreover, it is a personal decision to know who actually posted that video because I was right there with the Olori Omo Oba when that statement was made. Honestly, I had thought the issue would die a natural death, but sadly, it kept festering, leaving me with no other choice but to air my view on the matter.

There is no doubt that the internet community was ignited when K1 found himself at the center of this controversy following a statement he made during his late mother's Fidau prayer. In the video that went viral, K1 was heard using the phrase "Ganu" in reference to some Islamic clerics (Alfas). This remark has sparked significant debate and criticism, with many interpreting it as implying that certain Alfas attend such ceremonies primarily for financial gain. This is definitely not the situation. As I mentioned earlier, I was seated in the same room when that statement was made, and because the person who posted it wanted to be mischievous, he decided to edit that part alone to suit his mission.

What K1 said that day was twisted out of context because the whole thing was not played in full. It was out of respect, not otherwise, that he made the statement. Please take this to the bank. What he was trying to say was that the Alfas wouldn't allow the imminent faaji (enjoyment) where alcohol would be served, because it is against their doctrine, so it should be expected that while they are there, they will be respected by keeping to this rule until they've gone after the prayers to start the proper celebration.

Though he used the word "Ganu" as a 'slanguage' of Lagos Island, it was not to demean or ridicule them. Anyone in doubt should remove the hatred clog in their eyes and rewatch the video to see his countenance and gestures, which can easily give him away if he meant what they are painting it to be. Unfortunately, people are not interested in any other fact as long as the short clip on display seems to suit their expectations and narrative; then, nothing else matters.

K1 is an 'Akanda', ( Special One) and things around him catch fire like wildfire in the harmattan season. Do I have to blame nature for throwing such his way? Definitely not! There is a lot of favor following him, and I know people are generally not happy about his success in life, and this is understandable. The heavens have blessed him so much that they can't help but chorus, "Showun nikan ni?" (is he the only one).
Everything he does, people are quick to find fault. Many are envious of his success and wish he would fail and fall yakata. But K1 has refused to kiss the canvas despite several blows sent to his jaw and temple. How many people have the grace of the number one citizen calling them on the phone? The last time, I know how they almost crucified him over the presidential call, claiming he was disrespectful to Mr. President. Haba! A man who behaved like someone from Mbuti in Congo's Ituri Forest or like the Hadzas in Tanzania's Rift Valley, when he folded his hand behind his back and was bowing intermittently even when the president was not present. What other manner of respect did they still expect from him?

I also wondered how Imam Onikijipa expected him to apologize for what he didn't do. They should have listened to the whole tape before passing judgment. I won't fault him on this.

To me, the individual responsible for leaking the video have not only violated K1's privacy but have also attempted to tarnish his reputation. This kind of betrayal is particularly painful because it came from those who are expected to be loyal and protective. The actions of these so-called 'friends' have demonstrated a complete disregard for the principles of friendship and loyalty, raising questions about their true intentions.

Mo so yi moduro na.
This is still Kunle Rasheed, echoing out his inner thoughts.
