A 57-year-old British adventurer, Karl Bushby, has finally completed an extraordinary journey around the world after spending 28 years travelling on foot, bringing to an end one of the most remarkable endurance adventures in modern history.

Bushby, a former British Army paratrooper, returned to his hometown of Hull, England, on Monday, November 2, 2026, after covering approximately 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometres) across four continents.
His remarkable expedition, known as the Goliath Expedition, began on November 1, 1998, in Punta Arenas, southern Chile, when he was just 29 years old.

A Journey of Courage and Determination
What was originally expected to take about 12 years eventually stretched into nearly three decades because of immigration restrictions, financial difficulties, international border challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout the expedition, Bushby maintained two personal rules: he would not use transportation to advance his journey, and he would not return home until he had completed his mission.
His travels took him through dangerous jungles, deserts, freezing landscapes and remote communities.
Among his greatest achievements was crossing the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia in 2006. He also swam across the Caspian Sea and, in October 2026, the English Channel to reach Britain.

Emotional Homecoming After 28 Years

Hundreds of cheering supporters gathered in Hull to welcome the adventurer as he approached the conclusion of his historic journey.

Bushby expressed gratitude to the individuals and communities who had supported him during his travels.
His return also offered an opportunity to reunite with his mother, Angela, his son and his 12-year-old granddaughter, whom he had never previously met.
The expedition has attracted international attention, with a documentary about his extraordinary experiences reportedly in production.

A Lesson in Perseverance
Bushby's achievement offers a powerful example of determination, patience and commitment to a personal goal.
For 28 years, despite setbacks that might have discouraged many people, the British adventurer continued pursuing his ambition.
His story demonstrates that extraordinary achievements sometimes require years of sacrifice, courage and perseverance.
