Israelis are voting in a closely contested general election today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a major political challenge from former military chief Gadi Eisenkot.
Eisenkot, leader of the centrist Yashar party, has emerged as Netanyahu's principal challenger, with final pre-election opinion polls showing a close contest between the rival political blocs.
The election, Israel's first since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, comes amid deep political divisions, security concerns and public debate over the government's handling of regional conflicts.
According to election authorities, approximately 7.3 million Israelis are eligible to vote in the election, which will determine the composition of the country's 120-member parliament, known as the Knesset.
Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time and are scheduled to close at 10 p.m., with exit polls expected immediately afterwards.
EISENKOT CHALLENGES NETANYAHU'S GRIP ON POWER
Eisenkot, 66, has campaigned on national security, political accountability, and the need for an independent investigation into the failures surrounding the October 7 attacks.
Netanyahu, 77, has emphasised his experience in government, security leadership, and relationship with United States President Donald Trump.
Final pre-election surveys suggested that Eisenkot's Yashar party could secure between 22 and 23 parliamentary seats, compared with approximately 19 to 21 seats for Netanyahu's Likud party These figures remain opinion-poll projections, not election results.
ALL EYES ON THE RESULTS
Even after voting ends, the identity of Israel's next prime minister may remain uncertain.
Under Israel's parliamentary system, a governing coalition generally requires the support of at least 61 lawmakers.
Political negotiations could, therefore, continue for days or weeks if neither major bloc secures a parliamentary majority.
As polling stations prepare to close, attention is turning to the exit polls and the official counting process that will determine the country's next political direction.
