One of the things we are used to in Nigeria and Africa at large is never to believe in the words of the politicians or take their words to bank, the reason being that they hardly keep their election promises and this has made the electorates to tag politicians generally as liers.
There are few politicians who stand out in keeping their election promises, they are substantially as good as their words. These few have taken morally and ethically to their heart the need to protect their name or sustain the good name and legacy they inherit from their parents. They are politicians with good conscience and they believe in just allocation of value in politics.
A cultured politician will keep in mind the need of his constituency, he is an ardent beliver of issue based and people oriented politics and at the long run, he will not only be seen but generally known as a man of integrity.
Senator Niyi Adegbonmire SAN, the Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District within a year in office has proven to his constituents through his various programs and bills sponsored by him that he is a man that understands the true tenets of social contract in politics and the need for office holders to always keep their own end of the contact after the electorates have entrusted them with their mandate.
January last year, 2023, I was previledged to attend a program in Igbara-Oke my home town out of curiosity as I was fancinated by the title of the program, it was tagged "Igbara-Oke Political Confab". The program was facilitated by Snr. High Chief (Barr.) Banji Abuloye, the Ejemu of Igbara-Oke Kingdom, a pragmatic, vibrant, versatile and dynamic traditional chief.
The program turned out to be a core political engagement between Igbara-Oke community ably represented by traditional Chiefs (men and women) and few political leaders on one side and Senator Niyi Adegbonmire SAN a.k.a Omo Ekun on the other side. The community through these leaders both traditional and political clearly itemized the need of the community from the Senatorial Candidate then, which are five in number, but their ultimate need is establishment of Higher Institution in the town.
Senator Adegbonmire SAN didn't mince words in his response to their demand, when he stated that the Igbara-Oke community has mentioned what they wanted which is five in number, but he only wanted just one thing which is their votes and before their mutual needs could be attended to, Igbara-Oke must first do their part and if he is privileged to be elected, it is then that the demand of the community can be attended to.
Igbara-Oke during the election fulfill their part of the pact. As the nay sayers are about to start thinking that politicians are all one in letting down their people by not fulfilling their part of any of their election promises. Senator Niyi Adegbonmire SAN, as a cultured politician and a man of integrity decided to stand out. On Tuesday, 4th day of June, 2024. The bill for establishment of Federal University of Arts, Culture, Science and Tourism, Igbara-Oke, Ondo State sponsored by him scaled through the first reading at the Red Chambers.
This step of Senator Niyi Adegbonmire SAN, has rekindled the hope of Igbara-Oke people in democracy. Igbara-Oke community for some years now has facilitated the building of an expansive facility named the proposed site of Higher Institution. This deed Senator Adegbonmire SAN applauded during Igbara-Oke Political Confab.
With the multi millionaire and expansive facility on ground, it will guarantee the immediate take off of the University once the bill is signed into law, and it will reduce the cost of establishing the University by Federal Government by almost 1/3 (One third).
Truth be told, with the establishment of this Federal University in Igbara-Oke by Senator Adegbonmire SAN, despite the fact that he is not from the town, he has engraved his name in the heart of an average Igbara-Oke patriotic man. He is nothing but the long awaited Messiah of the town as the establishment of a Higher Institution in the town is an age long desire of the community. Senator Niyi Adegbonmire SAN is a cultured politician, man of integrity and genuine promise keeper and indeed Omo lu'a bi eniyan. Igbara oke will never forget you from now to generations unborn.
Tunde Victor Adebayo, writes from Igbara-Oke, Ifedore Local Government Area, Ondo State.
