VENO tv: FOREIGN NEWS CYPRUS FERRY DISASTER: 8 DEAD, 18 MISSING AS SEARCH FOR BLACK BOX INTENSIFIES

At least eight people have died and 18 others remain missing after a passenger ferry, FILOJET, capsized and sank off the coast of Kyrenia in northern Cyprus on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Earlier reports had put the death toll at seven with 23 missing, but authorities have since updated the figures.
The ferry was carrying 267 people — 259 passengers and eight crew members — and was travelling from Kyrenia to Ta?ucu in Turkey when it began taking in water shortly after departure. Rescue officials say 241 people were brought to safety.
Survivors described scenes of panic as the vessel became unstable. Some passengers reportedly put on life jackets and jumped into the sea, while others clung to the overturned ferry awaiting rescue. Coastguard vessels, helicopters and civilian boats joined the emergency operation.
The ferry later sank to a depth of about 514 metres. Investigators are now seeking to recover the vessel’s black box, which could provide vital information about what caused the disaster. A specialist vessel and divers are expected to assist in the recovery operation.
The captain and seven other crew members have been detained as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The exact cause of the sinking has not yet been officially established.
