EDITORIAL LOOKING BEYOND 2027: TIME TO DEBATE A SINGLE FOUR-YEAR TERM

The march towards Nigeria's 2027 general election is gathering momentum, with political parties and their leading figures positioning themselves for what promises to be another fiercely contested election.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to seek re-election, while opposition politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, remain prominent figures in discussions about who could challenge the ruling party.

As the political temperature rises, VENO International Magazine Weekly believes campaigns should be centred on issues, achievements and realistic programmes rather than insults, propaganda and personal attacks.
Nigerians deserve to hear clear answers: What will each candidate do differently? How will the economy be strengthened? How will insecurity be tackled? What are their plans for employment, education, healthcare, electricity and the cost of living?

The controversial removal of fuel subsidy will undoubtedly remain a major campaign issue. Opposition figures will challenge the government's handling of the policy, while the administration will defend its decisions. Rather than exchanging condemnations, politicians should explain their alternative policies and allow Nigerians to judge.

LOOKING BEYOND THE NEXT ELECTION
But Nigeria should also begin discussing what happens beyond 2027.

This medium believes the National Assembly should open a serious national conversation on whether elected executive office holders should serve one four-year term without re-election.
The present system allows a President and governors to seek a second four-year term. Unfortunately, the pursuit of re-election can sometimes dominate governance. Once politicians enter office, calculations about securing another term may begin almost immediately.

Government resources, political appointments and important decisions can consequently become entangled with re-election ambitions.
Would Nigeria benefit from a system where an elected leader knows from Day One that there is no second-term campaign ahead — only four years to perform and leave a legacy?

Such a reform could potentially create opportunities for more Nigerians to contribute their ideas and leadership. However, it would also have disadvantages: voters would lose the opportunity to reward a performing leader with another term, while four years may be too short to complete some major reforms and infrastructure projects.

That is precisely why the proposal deserves serious national debate rather than hurried legislation.

Our position is that Nigeria should examine the merits and drawbacks of a single four-year tenure for executive elective offices and determine whether it could reduce the obsession with re-election and encourage leaders to concentrate on governance.

Public office must never become an avenue for personal enrichment. Whether a leader serves four years or eight, accountability, transparency and service to the people must remain paramount.
Nigeria must look beyond who wins in 2027 and begin asking what political reforms can strengthen the country for generations to come.
