OSOGBO, August 14, 2026 — Ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured voters that preparations are in place for a smooth exercise, as residents make last-minute purchases across markets in the state.
INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Kunle Cornelius Ajayi, said old ballot papers had been destroyed, dismissing fears that obsolete electoral materials could find their way into Saturday’s election.
Ajayi said election materials are expected to arrive at voting centres by 8:00am, assuring the electorate that there would be no mix-up in the deployment of materials.
“The election will be flawless.”
INEC’s preparations also include thousands of BVAS machines, with additional backup devices expected to be available in case of technical difficulties.
Prof. Ajayi is an INEC National Commissioner whose tenure runs until October 2026, according to the Commission's published election-management records.
LAST-MINUTE RUSH IN MARKETS
Meanwhile, a VENO tv correspondent monitoring developments in Osun reports increased activity in markets as residents rush to buy food and other essential items ahead of the election.
Many residents said they wanted to have necessary supplies at home before voting begins on Saturday.
SECURITY: RESIDENTS CALL FOR NEUTRALITY
Security presence is already visible in Osogbo, the state capital, but residents are calling on security agencies to ensure that adequate deployment extends beyond the capital to towns, communities and polling areas across Osun State.
Beyond patrols and physical presence, residents stressed that neutrality and professionalism on the part of security personnel would be crucial to public confidence in the election.
The mood across the state indicates strong interest in the governorship contest. Many voters say they are eager to exercise their franchise, with expectations of a massive turnout.
With just hours to the opening of the polls, attention is now on INEC, security agencies, political parties and voters to ensure that the election is peaceful, credible and transparent.
VENO tv will continue to monitor developments across Osun State.
