The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended prominent constitutional lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, from using the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
According to a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi, the suspension was approved during the Committee's 173rd General Meeting held on June 23, 2026.
The LPPC explained that the suspension will remain in force pending the final determination of disciplinary proceedings currently before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other related proceedings. The Committee stated that the action was taken in line with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The Committee further directed Ozekhome to refrain from presenting or holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary process is concluded. It noted that the decision is intended to protect the integrity, dignity, and prestige of the SAN rank while the allegations are being reviewed.
Chief Mike Ozekhome is widely known as one of Nigeria's leading constitutional lawyers, a human rights activist, and a public affairs commentator. He has featured prominently in several high-profile legal and constitutional matters over the years.
The LPPC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professional ethics, discipline, and public confidence in the legal profession.
