There was mild drama at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday after the court ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, human rights activist, and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Following the ruling reportedly delivered by Justice Umar Mohammed, correctional officials positioned outside the court requested that Sowore board a prison transport vehicle, popularly known as a Black Maria, for onward movement to the correctional facility.
However, Sowore, who had arrived at the court premises in a DSS vehicle, declined the request. He insisted that he would not enter the Black Maria, while supporters at the scene chanted "Revolution Now" in solidarity with him.
According to eyewitness accounts, the activist questioned the need to be transported in the vehicle, maintaining that he would cooperate with officials but preferred to continue the journey in the DSS vehicle that brought him to court. After a brief exchange, he was eventually allowed to proceed in the alternative vehicle.
Sowore is currently facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) over comments he allegedly made concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The activist has consistently denied wrongdoing.
Outside the courtroom, actress and political figure Doris Ogala also drew attention as she reacted emotionally to the proceedings. In a video that circulated on social media, she was seen chanting "No to Injustice" while expressing displeasure over the court's decision.
The development has continued to generate reactions from supporters, civil society groups, and political observers, with many calling for due process and the protection of democratic rights.
As the legal proceedings continue, Nigerians are expected to closely monitor the case and its implications for freedom of expression, political dissent, and the nation's democratic institutions.
Democracy thrives when the rule of law, due process, and fundamental rights are respected by all parties.
