The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is battling another deadly Ebola outbreak as the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that an effective vaccine response could take up to nine months amid rising fatalities.
Health authorities confirmed that the outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus has continued to spread across parts of northeastern DRC, with over 135 deaths reportedly recorded. Medical teams and emergency response workers have intensified testing, isolation, surveillance, and border screening efforts to prevent further transmission.
According to reports, affected patients have shown symptoms including fever, weakness, vomiting, body pains, and in severe cases, bleeding. Several victims reportedly died shortly after showing symptoms, causing fears among residents and neighboring countries.
The outbreak was officially confirmed in Ituri Province, an area already affected by insecurity, population displacement, illegal mining activities, and heavy cross-border movement. Health experts warn these factors may worsen the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda has also activated emergency surveillance following reports that a traveler from the DRC tested positive for the virus and later died while receiving treatment.
The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, while the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued travel advisories for travelers heading to the DRC and nearby regions.
This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC since the deadly virus was first identified in 1976. Although the Bundibugyo strain has historically shown lower fatality rates compared to other Ebola variants, experts insist it remains highly dangerous and deadly if not contained quickly.
