Popular social media activist, VeryDarkMan (VDM), has criticized the directive reportedly issued by the Governor of Niger State, , regarding the arrest of individuals wearing dreadlocks as part of efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
In a trending video circulating on social media, VeryDarkMan described the governor's position as unfair and discriminatory. According to him, wearing dreadlocks does not make a person a criminal or irresponsible citizen.
He argued that many respected individuals, entertainers, and public figures wear dreadlocks, stressing that hairstyles should not be used as a basis for profiling people.
VeryDarkMan further stated that the government should focus more on creating employment opportunities and engaging young people positively rather than stereotyping them because of their appearance.
He also referenced biblical figures such as Samson and John the Baptist while making his argument, insisting that dreadlocks should not be associated with insecurity.
The social media commentator called on the governor to reconsider the directive and tender an apology to those who may feel unfairly targeted by the statement.
The controversy has generated mixed reactions across social media, with some supporting stronger security measures while others argue that personal appearance should not be linked to criminality.
As of the time of filing this report, the Niger State Government had not issued any further clarification regarding the matter.
