VENO tv: Editorial INEC, Elections and Stomach Infrastructure
Date: 20:06:26

The conduct of elections remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy. Once again, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) came under public scrutiny during the recent governorship election in Ekiti State, where reports of ballot box snatching and voter inducement surfaced in some areas.

This medium observed a branded campaign vehicle allegedly distributing bread to voters during the election. Such incidents have continued to raise concerns about the growing influence of what many Nigerians describe as "stomach infrastructure" in the nation's electoral process.

Rather than presenting clear and workable manifestos to the electorate, some politicians have chosen to rely on gifts such as food items, cups, bags of rice, and other materials to win support. While poverty remains a major challenge, elections should be determined by competence, credibility, and the vision candidates have for the people—not by temporary inducements.

INEC should therefore consider stronger measures and sanctions against candidates and political parties found engaging in voter inducement before or during elections. The electoral umpire must continue to strengthen mechanisms that promote transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the electoral process.

Equally important is the role of security agencies. Allegations that security personnel were used to intimidate or victimize opposition supporters in some locations, including Afao-Ekiti, deserve proper investigation. Security operatives are expected to remain neutral and professional during elections, ensuring a level playing field for all contestants.

As the nation prepares for the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State and the 2027 general elections, stakeholders must work together to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. Free, fair, and credible elections remain the foundation of democratic governance and national development.

Indeed, a stitch in time saves nine. If Nigeria truly desires credible elections, the time to address these challenges is now.

A word is enough for the wise.

This week's edition is packed with insightful and engaging reports on politics, entertainment, crime, and foreign affairs.
