VENO tv: Guinea-Bissau — “It Was a Ceremonial Coup” President Embaló Announced the Coup Knowing He Was Losing — Former President Jonathan Alleges By Kayode Adoide
Date: 28-11-25

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the recent political upheaval in Guinea-Bissau as “a ceremonial coup”, alleging that President Umaro Sissoco Embaló effectively announced his own removal after realizing he was losing control of the political situation.

According to Jonathan, who was part of the regional mediation team, the events did not reflect a traditional forceful takeover of government. Rather, President Embaló, fully aware of the unfolding political tide, “handed over to the military himself.”
Jonathan insisted that the election results must be released and announced transparently, stressing that anything short of this undermines democratic principles in the region.

The former Nigerian leader also expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d'Ivoire for their swift intervention during the crisis.

Jonathan explained that both ECOWAS leaders offered military aircraft for evacuation, but Côte d'Ivoire’s aircraft secured landing clearance earlier due to its proximity and strong Francophone–Lusophone ties.

> “Côte d'Ivoire obtained a landing permit before Nigeria could. So we asked the Nigerian team to stand down since the Ivorian aircraft had already landed,”
Jonathan clarified.

The situation in Guinea-Bissau continues to draw regional and international attention as West Africa faces growing concerns about democratic stability, contested mandates, and military interference in governance.
